TurnItIn.com for Faculty

TurnItIn.com is an Internet-based plagiarism detection service that works by comparing student papers to millions of books, newspapers, journal and magazine articles, and over 50,000,000 student papers previously submitted to TurnItIn. Upon students submitting their papers to TurnItIn, instructors receive a report identifying unoriginal phrases or paragraphs within a student paper.

To Access and Set Up:

  1. Login to Blackboard.
  2. Go to the Control Panel and select any content area.
  3. Inside the content area at the left end of the content options is a drop down menu. Click on the down arrow and select Turnitin Assignment from the list and then click go.
  4. Fill out the Turnitin screen: title, instructions, points, available = yes, check the display until box and set a date for the assignment to end.
  5. Select the file and press Submit.

How Students Submit a Paper:

  1. Login to Blackboard and select the appropriate assignement set up by the instructor.
  2. Click the View/Complete button.
  3. Complete the on-screen form: Name, Paper Title, and browse for the file to upload.
  4. Choose file and then submit.

You should have students use a consistent naming convention, a1_smith.doc (assignment number & last name)

To View Results of a Submitted Paper:

  1. Login to Blackboard.
  2. Go to the Control Panel.
  3. Go to the Turnitin Assignments link under the Course Tools heading.
  4. Click on the view link for the assignment you setup.
  5. Click on Originality Score/Report.

Insturctors can use any Blackboard course site to submit a paper. If you want students to submit their own work through the assignment link in Blackboard then you must have their specific class setup on Blackboard.
