- EDCU 9000 21st Century Family Dynamics and the Effect on Student Achievement
3 Credits
- The family dynamic has changed dramatically over in the past 50 years, and many of today's students may not be from a "typical" family in which both parents are married. This class will examine the sociological make-up of several different types of families and what teachers need to know about the psychological, emotional, and academic needs of children from the modern family.
- EDCU 9020 Action of Bullies: A Gender Study 3 Credits
- Bullying is not just physical, negative acts. Negative verbal acts and indirect actions among students including manipulation of friendships, gossip, and exclusion from cliques may impact academic achievement. The actions of bullying are different for boys and girls. This course will analyze the causes of bullying by both sexes, help teachers identify subtle bullying in schools, classrooms, and hallways as well as other areas, and explore ways in which teachers may use conflict resolution techniques appropriate for the different genders and ages in order to provide a safe learning environment.
- EDCU 9829 Conflict Resolution and the Adolescent 3 Credits
- As students approach and travel through the adolescent years, the various struggles they encounter have a tremendous impact on both their social and academic well-being. This course will address those sometimes daily conflicts we see our students struggling with and offer ways teachers may pro-actively and positively address such conflicts.
- EDCU 9004 Media Effects on Adolescents and Their Academic Performance 3 Credits
- Teachers will explore the ways in which the media affects the adolescent. This course will examine how television, music, magazines, video games, and movies are a powerful agent in the socialization of today's youth. Teachers will develop proactive methods in which positive media images can be incorporated into the curriculum and in teaching character education.
- EDDU 9026 Building Self-Esteem in the Classroom 3 Credits
- Many children suffer from low self-esteem and there are specific indicators that may identify this problem. Low self-esteem in our youth may have devastating academic and social effects. This course will discuss the causes of low self-esteem and address the specific risk factors that may prevent a healthy self-esteem in children. This class will explore important techniques to build self-esteem of our students in the classroom and recommend additional outside sources of intervention.

- EDKU 9001 Computer Utilization & Literacy 3 Credits
- This is a course designed to guide educators in the useful resources available on the internet, offering an exploration of credible educational WebPages, important navigation of state WebPages and sample assessments, unit plans tailored toward content areas, and an overview of the dangers the internet may pose to youngsters
- EDKU 9825 Internet Safety and Cyber Bullying 3 Credits
- I-Safety and the rise of Cyber bullying are two serious educational concerns that are affecting the school community. The goal of this course is to educate teachers on the issue of internet safety and how teachers may contribute the development of a cyber smart student as well as promote internet safety through instruction.

- EDDU 9043 Teaching with Graphic Organizers 3 Credits
- Graphic Organizers will greatly enhance students' understanding of content. This class will give teachers the tools necessary to promote students' organization, application, and synthesis of knowledge. This class will impart brain-based research as well as research-based methodology for the use of graphic organizers among all student populations. Teachers will create practical and effective lesson and unit plans that incorporate the proper use and delivery of graphic organizers.
- EDRU 9822 Multiple Intelligence & Classroom Practice 3 Credits
- Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences is founded on the idea that there are several types of intelligences and that "it is not how smart [you are], but what kind of smart you are". This course will thoroughly analyze these intelligences and suggest ways teachers may develop their classroom practices in terms of gearing instructional objectives for the different learning styles Gardner demonstrates.

- EDLU 9000 Active Reading Strategies in the Content Areas 3 Credits
- Incorporating active reading strategies in any classroom where students must read to acquire knowledge will promote better levels of critical thinking. This class will focus on the various active reading strategies teachers may use to ensure comprehension, connection, evaluation, and clarification of material while taking tests and during daily lessons.
- Special Needs/Gifted Instruction
- EDNU 9010 Developmental Disorders From Insights to Instruction 3 Credits
- With many of today's students being diagnosed with various developmental disorders, teachers are expected more and more to be well versed in both understanding and successfully instructing these students and their both challenging and very different needs. This course will provide teachers with clear explanations as to what ADD & ADHD are, as well as Autism, Oppositional Defiance, Asperger Syndrome, and conduct disorders, as well as how they affect both the student's learning abilities and your instruction. Effective Reading Strategies for Struggling Readers This course explores the research to help struggling readers in all grade levels and reviews effective strategies. Curriculum will focus on successful techniques used to promote student success in learning to decode and instructional lessons to improve students' vocabulary and comprehension.
- EDNU 9000 Overview of Learning Disabilities 3 Credits
- A discussion of the prognosis, treatments and research surrounding learning disabilities in this course will promote strategies teachers may use to encourage success in students with disorders that affect spoken and written language, mathematical calculations, coordinate movements, and direct attention.

- EDUU 9827 Effects of Nutrition and Exercise on the Student "Body" 3 Credits
- There is presently an obesity epidemic in the United States and children are at risk due to their diets and lack of opportunity for exercise. This class will examine the current problem of obesity and discuss proactive ways in which teachers can help create healthy eating and exercise habits in their students through information and role modeling.
- EDDU 9826 Integrated Co-Teaching in an Inclusion Classroom 3 Credits
- The inclusive classroom is one that welcomes all and provides focused differentiated instruction to not only meet the needs of a unique special education population but also challenge those in the mainstream. This course will not only discuss the various models for inclusion but provide all teachers with concrete strategies to incorporate into their daily instruction that will help and empower all students in both the academic setting as well as social.
- EDDU 9832 Problem Based Learning 3 Credits
- Teachers will become familiar with the use of problem based learning as an effective classroom teaching strategy and be able to demonstrate the numerous techniques in utilizing the strategy. Specific topics will include problem based learning design and the implementation process, direct instruction and discovery to use the problem based learning techniques, exploring several problem based learning scenarios and creating examples of outcomes to share with their colleagues and within their classrooms.
- EDDU 9011 Strategies for Critical Thinking and Learning 3 Credits
- This course will explore the various levels seen in Bloom's Taxonomy and how to create, implement, and evaluate lessons that promote critical thinking in the classroom.
