Professor Hewitt spent six years in the Marine Corps before joining the Orange County Sheriff’s Department; the fifth largest sheriff’s office in the country. He graduated number one as all around top cadet out of a class of 65 in his basic academy. He was first assigned to civil division, then to work the jails, and during the next few years was a patrol officer, criminal investigator, sergeant in charge of sex crimes investigations, fugitive investigation commander, and SWAT officer. He rose through the ranks to captain, station commander and chief. He retired in 2004 as Assistant Sheriff, in charge of approximately 3,000 personnel and a budget of 300 million dollars.
Professor Hewitt , a graduate of the National FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, and two year California Command College, is highly decorated, receiving numerous awards including Officer of the Year three times, Supervisor of the Year, Manager of the Year, Citizen of the Year, the California Police Officers State Award of Professional Achievement, the USC National Award of Professional Achievement, the Marine corps Medal from the Commandant of the Marine Corps, Citation of Merit from the President of the United States and the American Legion Award for Merit and valor.
Professor Hewitt, who began his teaching career as a survival officer in the Marines, and later as a part time instructor for Santa Ana College, began teaching for Brandman approximately 14 years ago. He has a passion for teaching and since his retirement from law enforcement now wears two hats at Brandman. He teaches Criminology and Sociology in the School of Arts and Sciences and Leadership in the School of Extended Education. Having appeared on radio and national television numerous times, including the NBC Today Show out of New York, professor unit is considered one of the foremost experts in his field, and was recently recognized as such by the FBI in their 75 year history book, published in 2010.
