Remember, never pay for a scholarship or scholarship search! Even if it is only a few dollars. Some even have a guarantee that you will get a scholarship. These are usually scams, so beware.



NEW! NHSC Scholarship

Deadline: Applications must be received by 5:00 p.m. EDT, June 1, 2010.

Requirements: The National Health Service Corp is seeking applicants who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited health professions training program.  Eligible applicant programs are medicine (MD or DO), dentistry, family nurse practitioner, certified nurse midwife or physician assistant.  This opportunity has been expanded to include eligibility for all primary care nurse practitioners.  Applicants are eligible to apply before their first year or after they have finished one or more years of school.

Law Enforcement Personnel Dependents (LEPD) Grant Program

Deadline: Continuous

Requirements:

  1. Be the child (natural or adopted) or spouse, at the time of death or injury, of a CA: peace officer or law enforcement officer; officer or employee of the Department of Corrections of the Department of Youth Authority; or firefighter.
  2. Be enrolled in a minimum of six (6) units
  3. Must demonstrate financial need (from FAFSA)

California Mathematics Council 

Deadline: January 31 each year

Requirements:

  1. Reside, teach or attend school in Southern California 
  2. Additional requirements vary depending on the category of scholarship and grant you apply for

Amount: $100 - $1,000

Lurie Center Elementary Teaching Award (offered by California Mathematics Council)

Requirements:

  1. A full-time elementary teacher (K-6).
  2. An assignment that includes students of color.
  3. Demonstrated efforts inside and outside the classroom to encourage students of color to pursue high academic standards and high educational goals.
  4. Efforts inside and outside the classroom to provide students with mathematics enrichment.
  5. Participation in professional mathematics organizations and/or participation in local, regional, statewide, or national mathematics projects.

The recipient will receive:

  1. A plaque
  2. One year complimentary CMC-South membership
  3. Free fall conference registration (held in early November)
  4. A complimentary fall conference banquet ticket
  5. One day substitute reimbursement to attend the fall conference
  6. Up to $200 to reimburse associated costs of fall conference attendance, including the purchase of education materials

The Orange County Hispanic Education Endowment Fund

Deadline: February 15 each year

Requirements: The Orange County Hispanic Education Endowment Fund (HEEF) of the Orange County Community Foundation provides scholarships for Orange County Hispanic students with financial need at all levels along the education continuum, from elementary school through graduate degree programs. HEEF strives to respond to the educational needs of Hispanic youth, thereby improving opportunities for all Hispanic students.

Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada

The San Diego Foundation

Common Deadline: February 15 each year (others vary)

Requirements: The San Diego Foundation offers 26 scholarships that can be applied for with one common application. Each scholarship has specific eligibility criteria that were defined by the individual, corporation or organization when the fund was established. The criteria are listed under each of the scholarships offered (see website for more information). Most of scholarships require that applicants:

  1. Be a resident of San Diego County;
  2. Attend an accredited two year college, four year university or licensed trade & vocational school;
  3. Be a full-time student;
  4. Demonstrate financial need (FAFSA);
  5. Have a measure of academic achievement;
  6. Be of good moral character, and
  7. Be a legal resident of the United States.

The National Italian American Foundation

Requirements:

  1. Be enrolled in an accredited institution.

National Association of Women in Construction 

Deadline: April 8 each year

Requirements: 

  1. Full time student at a private college
  2. Minimum 3.0 GPA
  3. Have matriculated as a junior or senior at the time of application
  4. Have an appropriate major and interest in working in a construction related field
  5. Must show financial need and projected ultimate goals
  6. Must  have permanent residence in the greater Long Beach area, which includes communities in the southeast part of Los Angeles County

A.W. Bodine-Sunkist Memorial Scholarship 

Deadline: April 30 each year

Requirements: 

  1. Undergraduate with background in CA or AZ agriculture (student or someone in immediate family must derive majority of income from agriculture)
  2. GPA and extracurricular activities indicative of potential for success
  3. Must have financial need (from FAFSA)

Amount: Up to $3,000 per academic year, renewable up to 4 years.

Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships 

Deadline: May 1 for the following academic year (example: apply by May 1, 2009 for the 2009-2010 academic year)

Requirements: Applicants must have completed at least two years of university or college course work (or must have a secondary school education and have been employed in a recognized vocation for at least two years) when the scholarship begins. All applicants must be citizens of a country in which there is a Rotary Club. Initial application must be made through a local Rotary club in the applicant's legal or permanent residence, or place of full-time study or employment. Persons with disabilities and members of Rotary Clubs are eligible and encouraged to apply. The following persons are ineligible for any Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship: A Rotarian; an Honorary Rotarian; an employee of a club, district, or other Rotary entity or of Rotary International; a spouse, lineal descendant (child or grandchild), a spouse of a lineal descendant, or an ancestor (parent or grandparent) of any living person in the foregoing categories.

National Council of Jewish Women

  4. 3.0 minimum GPA

Pat Nixon Scholarship 

Deadline: July 15 each year

Requirements:

  1. Must be an Orange County resident
  2. Must be a registered Republican woman voter, 25 years of age or older
  3. Be available for a personal interview if a finalist

Gates Millennium Scholars

Deadline: August 15 each year

Requirements:

  1. Must be an African American, Hispanic American, American Indian/Alaska Native, or Asian Pacific American
  2. Must be citizen or permanent resident of the United States
  3. Have cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale 
  4. Be accepted or enrolled full time as an undergraduate, OR be a graduate student in mathematics, science, engineering, education, or library science
  5. Be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant
  6. Have demonstrated leadership and commitment through participation in community service, extracurricular activities or other activities that reflect leadership abilities
