Brandman Alumni award scholarships to psychology undergraduate, MBA student
Brandie Cox and Melisa Roden are the recipients of the 2018 Brandman University Alumni Scholarship.
Each was chosen on the basis of an essay describing how completing a degree would be meaningful and how earning a degree, thanks to the scholarship, could affect the greater community. Each receives $500 thanks to the ongoing fundraising efforts of Brandman Alumni
Cox is working toward her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the Fairfield campus with plans to continue at Brandman to earn a master’s degree as well. Ultimately, she would like to complete her Ph.D.
“We live in a world where mental health services are desperately needed and a time when mental disorders are stigmatized because they are poorly understood in society,” wrote Cox in her essay. “Because of this, many of those who need help choose to deny it for fear that it will further their inability to be accepted at work or in everyday life. It is my desire to dedicate my work to advocating for mental health resources and to spread awareness.”
The scholarship money arrived in time for Roden to complete her MBA with an emphasis in entrepreneurship. Roden graduated from Chapman University nearly 20 years ago and managed to raise six children while running first a home-based desktop publishing business and then a home child care business.
She decided her true calling was in owning businesses but felt she lacked the education and guidance to run one properly. Thanks to the MBA program, she wrote in her essay, she is “learning what it takes to create, finance, build and maintain a business, as well as writing a complete business plan, and making my dreams come true. Additionally, I am building relationships with peers and teachers, who can continue to help provide guidance and support in the future.”
She already has a business in mind, the Galaxy Game Café, which takes her passions for games in a non-virtual social space and turns it into a "Star Wars"-themed community-centered café and gaming area.
“Earning a scholarship from the Brandman University Alumni Association will not only help me financially but will also help add fuel to my internal fire as I take the next scary steps toward putting my post-graduation dreams in motion,” she wrote.
