Access to Technology Tools to Amplify Learning Philosophy at Leading Adult Education Institution
IRVINE, Calif., July 11, 2018 – Brandman University's emphasis on career-oriented learning is reaching new heights thanks to its enhanced academic relationship with Esri, the global market leader in location intelligence and geographic information system (GIS) software. Esri’s cutting edge mapping and data analytics tools enable Brandman students to collect, analyze, and see data, present it in innovative ways and reach solutions that could help solve problems on both a local and global level.
Rooted in an interdisciplinary perspective, GIS technology provides the ability to overlay location data with layers of other data sets to easily visualize results using maps and 3D scenes. GIS can also bring people and resources closer together. Decision-makers from many fields and occupations use it to make visual data real and relatable.
“Corporate-academic partnerships that allow students access to systems and technology for applied learning in real-world applications – and in the case of employed adult learners, applied immediately into their work product – are becoming a crucial element in today’s higher education landscape,” said Charles A. Bullock, executive vice chancellor of academic affairs and chief academic officer-provost of Brandman University. “We are excited to build a business degree program that uses Esri’s Insights for ArcGIS, a tool we’re convinced will make location intelligence ubiquitous for advancing business capabilities.”
Brandman University,a leading career-oriented education institution, meets the unique needs of adult students. Itis deploying Esri software to amplify graduate and undergraduate degree curriculum and certificate programs in the School of Business & Professional Studies, School of Arts & Sciences, and the School of Extended Education. Each equips students with the data analysis and critical-thinking skills crucial for success in today’s rapidly evolving workplace.
“Advances in technology are enabling the generation of, and access to, new forms of data, providing unique opportunities for students interested in learning data science,” said Dr. Sheila Lakshmi Steinberg, professor of social and environmental studies and chair of the GIS committee at Brandman University. “Together with Esri, we’re helping to break down technology barriers and, armed with the understanding of geospatial thinking, we’re seeing students tackle new and complex ideas with great enthusiasm and the ability to make a difference using GIS.”
The Brandman University curricula is powered by Esri’s cloud-based suite of GIS tools. Esri technology is used by more than 350,000 organizations around the world, including Fortune 500 companies, universities, the world’s largest cities and national governments.
“Location has become an indispensable form of data today,” said Jack Dangermond. Esri founder and president. “Geography is a crucial aspect of every decision that organizations make, so it is important to equip students with the skills to understand spatial data. Esri is proud to provide its tools to the next generation of problem solvers.”
The Esri tools used throughout Brandman University programming allow GIS to be scaled to a variety of levels and help students at all educational levels participate and learn. The MBA in Business Intelligence & Data Analytics is aimed at corporate leaders and managers with the need for a strong suite of analytical skills. The Insights for ArcGIS program is an integral part of the program. The Bachelor of Arts in Integrated Social Sciences focuses on using data to develop interdisciplinary problem-solving approaches to societal issues with storytelling and Esri’s Story Maps as key tools. Brandman University’s School of Extended Education offers a certificate program in GIS for nonprofit employees and volunteers to understand how geospatial tools can be used to gain insights and influence organizational data-driven decisions. Students learn to communicate the important geographical impacts that nonprofit work has on relevant populations.
Access to GIS education is making the technology more accessible for future implementation across organizations and industries, including government, businesses, financial, health care, scientific research, education, nonprofit, and others.
“Innovation and evaluation are guiding principles for both Brandman University and Esri, and, as a result of our expanded educational relationship, Brandman students are emerging as the winners with the ability to use the skillsets learned in the classroom to differentiate themselves in a technology-driven society,” said Bullock.
Brandman University ranks among the national leaders with a graduation rate in excess of 80 percent for non-first time, full-time students, according to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), a system of surveys conducted annually by the National Center for Education Statistics, part of the U.S. Department of Education.
