Brandman University Announces 2014 Military Academic Achievement Award
Congratulations to USAF Master Sergeant Carlos Damian, who received the Brandman University Military Leadership Award
Brandman University is announcing the 2014 winner of its Military Academic Achievement Award, recognizing a student who’s also a military service member for their outstanding achievements in the classroom and in the military. This year’s award winner selected by Brandman University is Master Sergeant Carlos Damian, of the U.S. Air Force, currently stationed at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst near Trenton, New Jersey.
Sergeant Damian is a Section Chief in the 305th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, responsible for providing leadership for the 200 active duty Squadron members. His primary responsibility is to provide mission ready C-17 maintainers to support Air Mobility Command’s rapid global mobility. “Sergeant Damian is a professional who is serious about his education,” said Mary Ann Bardoni-Barbe, Brandman’s JBLM campus director. “He understands the value of education as it relates to his career and beyond.”
Military Academic Achievement Award winners are selected based on the recommendation of their academic advisor, with approval from the university’s campus director. Consideration for this honor is based upon grade point average at the university, attitude, and professionalism. Sergeant Damian is currently pursuing his bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership, with graduated expected spring 2014. He’ll be honored at a ceremony to be held November 19 at the Stone Education Center at JBLM.
“Winning this award offers me a little bit of personal satisfaction,” said Sergeant Damian. “It’s not just the award itself but the countless hours spent balancing my life in pursuit of higher education. My family is excited for this award because they see work I put in night after night, and this award is a testament to their dedication as well.” Damian plans to continue his education at Brandman, and begin his Master’s degree in Human Resources once he completes his Bachelors.
Sergeant Damian joined the Air Force in July 1997. After completing Basic Military Training at Lackland AFB, Texas, he attended Technical Training at Keesler AFB, Mississippi as a Communication, Navigation and Missions Systems Specialist. His first duty assignment was at Fairchild AFB, Washington where he worked on KC-135 R/T model aircraft, deploying in support of operations SOUTHERN WATCH, NORTHERN WATCH, and ALLIED FORCE.
After being selected for a special duty assignment to Lackland AFB, Texas as a Military Training Instructor, Sergeant Damian returned to Joint Base Lewis-McChord maintaining C-17A aircraft. Sergeant Damian deployed to support operations IRAQI, ENDURING FREEDOM and to Antarctica in direct support of the Nation Science Foundation’s operation DEEP FREEZE.
Sergeant Damian is also the recipient of numerous awards during his career, including the USO Service Member of the Year, West Coast Region, in 2009, the Otis Civilian Military Member of the year in 2012, presented by the Massachusetts State Senate, as well as the 2013 First Sergeant of the Year, 21st Operations Group, at Peterson AFB, Colorado.
