Brandman University Nursing Instructor Selected for American Association of Nurse Practitioners Future Leaders Program
Dr. George Byron Peraza-Smith is one of only 17 selected nationwide for AANP leadership program
IRVINE, Calif. (September 3, 2014) — The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), the largest national professional membership organization for nurse practitioners (NPs) of all specialties, has announced that Brandman University’s Dr. George Byron Peraza-Smith has been selected to participate in the prestigious AANP Future Leaders Program.
Dr. Peraza-Smith serves as an associate professor and director, Post Masters DNP Program for the Marybelle and S. Paul Musco School of Nursing and Health Professions at Brandman University’s Irvine Campus. He is a gerontological nurse practitioner that specializes in gerontology primary care and gero-psychiatry.
Dr. Peraza-Smith will join 17 other participants in early October for an initial two-day formal training focusing on leadership development and other components of the program. “I am honored and humbled to be part of such an esteem group of my colleagues,” said Dr. Peraza-Smith. “I believe my participation in this program will allow me to be an influential role model for our students and to ‘walk the talk’ on the importance of nurse practitioner leaders being actively involved in our professional associations.”
The newly launched 12-month program is designed to develop the next generation of NP leaders through a variety of initiatives that will provide a broad vision of the NP role in the current and future health care environment. Those selected for the program are relatively early in their NP careers, serving in clinical, administrative, and education roles, with demonstrated potential to assume increasing national leadership both within AANP and throughout the nation.
