The Brandman community is mourning the passing of a colleague. Joseph Ovick, Ed.D. died unexpectedly on March 30. A memorial service will be held Monday, May 1, at 4:30 p.m. at Christ the King Church in Pleasant Hill, California.

“Joe was a long-time advisory board member and adjunct at Brandman University, formerly Chapman University College. His mentoring and instruction over the years helped shape outstanding educational leaders and he made a thumbprint of distinguished leadership on our program. He was one of the most outstanding educational leaders I’ve ever met. While we will miss him, the loss to the profession is truly profound,” said Christine Zeppos, dean of the Brandman University School of Education.

Barbara Bartels, assistance vice chancellor for Community Relations and who knew Ovick as a faculty member, Walnut Creek community member and education leader, said, “For me personally, he was a fabulous mentor, teacher and colleague. He was an advocate for children and adults alike and had a true love of learning, as well as for sharing. I will miss him dearly.”

Ovick also served as the Walnut Creek campus MA-ELA Leadership Coach and served on several dissertation committees. Most recently, he was the Contra Costa County superintendent for 18 years, retiring in 2014.

Zeppos and the entire Brandman University community extends its sympathies to his wife, Debbie, and the family.

More about his career and impact on the Contra Costa County community can be found on the East Bay Times website.
