For doctoral students, moving up begins while class is still in session

It doesn’t take long for certain themes to emerge when talking to Ed.D. students from Brandman, particularly the ones who have already seen the program aid them in advancing their careers.

We caught up with recently promoted doctoral students during their recent Ed.D. Immersion weekend in Irvine. Although their jobs and experiences vary widely – from classroom teacher to middle school principal to being a dean at a community college to heading up a division of the Space & Naval Warfare Systems for the Department of Defense – each spoke enthusiastically about the leadership skills they felt they were building through the Brandman program.

Here are some of the things they had in common when talking about what led to their new positions:

  • A lifelong interest in learning and bettering themselves
  • Wanting to make a difference on a larger scale
  • Not only learning about building relationships, teamwork and networking in the classroom but also putting it to use, first in their cohort meetings and then at their workplaces
  • Developing their own ideas while studying transformational change and then helping create change in their own organizations
  • Being equipped through their studies and cohort meetings with tools and skills they didn’t know they needed but that now help them see possibilities they never before imagined.

Lindsay Yossef, Stephanie Groat, Michelle Harmeier, Michaelle Knight, Cindy Brase, Herb Callahan, Jacqueline Kearns, Edison Kelly, Christine Hinkle, Rachel Donnelley, Elizabeth Pratt, Gregory Negron, David Kline

Cindy Brase: Promoted from teacher to professional development provider for the Etiwanda School District.

Herb Callahan: Promoted twice since starting the Ed.D. program, first from regional human resources manager for Golden State Foods to corporate director of leadership development and then to senior director of human resources for McDonald’s distribution. Golden State, based in Irvine, is a $7.5 billion international food manufacturer and distributor.

Rachel Donnelly: Changed from being a classroom teacher at a small independent school to an administrative role as division director of a larger Jewish day school.

Stephanie Groat: Added an additional role as coordinator of student interventions and support to her existing position of principal at Maidu Elementary School in the Eureka Union School District.

Michelle Harmeier: Changed from middle school principal in the Dixie School District in Marin County to director of human resources for the San Mateo-Foster City School District in San Mateo County.

Christine Hinkle: Promoted from assistant principal at a high school to elementary school principal in the Chino Valley Unified School District.

Jacqueline Kearns: Changed from academy director for the Vallejo City Unified School District to program manager of Accountability, Assessment & Instructional Technology for the Solano County Office of Education.

Edison Kelly: Promoted from high school principal to coordinator of student support and management.

David Kline: Promoted from principal at Turlock Junior High School to director of human resources in the Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District.

Michaelle Knight: Moved from being a professional development instructor at a vocation school to training coordinator for Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego.

Gregory Negron: Promoted from Test Evaluation & Certification group leader to branch head for Space & Naval Warfare Systems Pacific San Diego.

Elizabeth Pratt: Promoted from associate dean of Economic Workforce Development to dean of Economic Workforce Development and the District Auxiliary Service for Napa Valley Community College.

Lindsay Yossef: Moved to a higher-level analyst position at her advertising firm and was given the opportunity to teach as an adjunct for Brandman University.
