A fish consumption survey built around using an Android tablet as the main survey tool was the focus of a presentation by Dr. Sheila L. Steinberg at the annual meeting of the Southern California Academy of Sciences at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles on May 15.

Steinberg’s talk was part of the special session, Technology in Science. The fish consumption survey, which is still being conducted in San Diego with the help of the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project, was designed so those conducting the survey could talk directly to people fishing from the pier or getting off fishing boats in the harbor. Using the tablet allows them to maximize mobility and engagement with the public, said Steinberg in her presentation. “We need to design surveys that can be implemented in a culturally appropriate manner – to appeal to different culture – while using the innovative approach of the tablet to collect survey data.”

Steinberg is a professor of social sciences in the School of Arts and Sciences at the Irvine campus.
