Human resources degree programs earn 5-year certification from SHRM

February 22, 2017

Brandman University’s degree programs for human resources received a five-year recertification from the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM), announced Kath Bates, associate professor of human resources and organizational leadership in the School of Business and Professional Studies. The certified programs are the Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) with a human resources emphasis, the MBA with human resources emphasis and the newly revamped Master of Science in Human Resources (M.S. HR).

For students graduating with those degrees, it means their education is aligned with SHRM standards. Bates said SHRM is the top professional organization for human resources in the world with almost 300,000 members.

“We designed our M.S. HR program to support the SHRM body of competencies and body of knowledge, which were revised two years ago,” said Bates. The revision moves the human resources degree from one emphasizing tactics to one emphasizing strategy. “There’s been a huge shift in human resources with more and more outsourcing of HR services. So to be in HR, you really need to know how to strategize and how to use the (outsourcing) services,” said Bates.

Other School of Business faculty members involved developing the human resources programs are Sharon Floyd, Gale Mazur and Helen Eckmann.
