JBLM Service Member Scholar honors awarded to Webster, Lambo

November 16, 2017 by Brandman University

One fulfilled a childhood dream. The other wanted to honor a family tradition. Both Brandman University Joint Base Lewis-McChord students are being honored with the 2017 Service Member Scholar Award.

Master Sgt. Mattie Webster and Spc. Monique Olanike Lambo “stood out amongst the others for their active duty service and engagement and involvement as a student. They really participate in their academic success and give the focus, effort and commitment required to be academically successful,” said Lorine Hill, Brandman University campus director at Joint Base Fort Lewis - McChord Field.

Webster has 23 years of service, first in the U.S. Navy and Navy Reserves for six years followed by the U.S. Air Force and Air Force Reserves for 17 years. She continues a family tradition. Her father, brother, brother-in-law, aunt and uncle also served.

She also wanted the job skills the military can provide. Webster works as a client systems technician (IT support), and is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership. She finds classes that teach skills such as change management are already helping her.

Personnel like to know what is going on and provide input on how these changes will affect the way they do their jobs. It is important for upper management to be aware of this and make sure that these concerns are being addressed. My section recently went through a change, and I was able to apply the knowledge I gained in the class to help my airmen make a smooth transition.  It is a great feeling to be able to do that,” she said.

Webster isn’t new to higher education. She already has three associate degrees in business administration, criminal justice and information technology. But she says the bachelor’s degree will better position her in the workforce when she retires from service.

“It has been over ten years since I last attended college and the staff at Brandman University have been wonderful. I want to thank them for nominating me for this award and all the support they have provided with my decision to return to college to pursue my degree,” she said.

Spc. Monique Olanike Lambo

Joining the Army has been a goal for Lambo since she was a little girl.

“I remember watching the Army’s “Be All You Can Be” commercials and suddenly having a rush of adrenaline rush through me,” Lambo said.

Lambo is a human resources specialist and is pursuing Brandman University’s Master of Science in Human Resources and certificate in organizational leadership. Less than three years into her service, she credits the good leadership she’s had so far and her father for inspiring her to pursue an advanced degree.

“One thing I’ve learned is there is no one-size-fit-all approach to leadership. I also learned that It starts with me. I can’t expect for change to take place or for others around me to change unless I’m willing to make a change within myself,” she said. “Completing a master’s degree has always been a goal of mine and my dad wouldn’t have had it any other way.”

With the goal of serving as a future leader in the military, Lambo says working towards her advanced degree has helped her gain the respect of seniors and peers.

Both Webster and Lambo will be recognized at the 9th Annual Service Member Scholar Academic Achievement Awards ceremony on Nov. 15 at the Joint Base Lewis McChord Stone Education Center.
