JBLM campuses honor Perez and Martin with Military Scholar Academic Achievement awards
Army 1st Lt. Kelly Martin and Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Ernesto Perez Jr. received Military Scholar Academic Achievement Awards at a ceremony on Nov. 14. They were recognized by Brandman University Joint Base Lewis McChord campuses for their academic excellence and dedication to service and community.
“They’re also being honored for what they have to overcome as students while serving,” said Lorine Hill, campus director for JBLM, at the 10th annual award held at the Stone Education Center.
Hill presented each with a $1,000 scholarship behalf of the university.
Martin is working toward her M.A. in Organizational Leadership at the Fort Lewis campus. She is a medical service officer at Joint Base Lewis McChord, Washington, whose duties include evacuation platoon leader for the 520th Area Support Medical Company, executive officer for the 98th Medical Detachment (combat stress control) and executive officer for the Bravo Company, 47th Combat Support Hospital.
Martin earned her bachelor’s degree from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she studied criminal justice and history. She is in the process of relocating to Fort Stewart, Georgia, where she will be assigned at the operation planner for the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, upon completion of the Army course covering plans, operations, intelligence, training and security. In her new role, she’ll be the principal advisor to commanders and will direct and coordinate staff functions.
Perez is also in the MAOL program. He is operations superintendent for the 627th Communications Squadron of the 627th Air Base Group at Joint Base Lewis McChord, Washington.
Perez is responsible for leading 97 military and civilian personnel, providing command, control, communications and computer support to the Department of Defense’s largest joint base. He oversees 11 work centers, supporting $106 million joint domain.
Perez grew up in Sebastian, Texas, and entered the Air Force in 1994. He earned his B.A. in management studies from University of Maryland University College and has been stationed in Germany, Japan, Korea and Guam as well as Texas, Colorado and Washington. He has been deployed twice in support of Operations Southern Watch and Joint Forge. In 2017, he received the Gen. John P. Jumper Award for Excellence in Warfighting Integration, the latest of numerous awards and achievements. Perez has a 4.0 GPA as a Brandman student.
