Lindsey Guinn Bird, a 2004 graduate of the single subject credential program at the Modesto campus, has been selected to receive one of five 2015 Carlston Family Foundation Outstanding Teacher of America Awards. Each teacher selected receives a $15,000 cash award and a grant of $5,000 for her or his school.

Bird is the director of the Grace Davis High School Language Institute and also teaches social science for the English Language Development (ELD) program.  The Institute also recently received a gold ribbon award from the California Department of Education.

More than 100 teachers were nominated for the Carlston award from throughout California. Teachers are nominated by former students enrolled in or recently graduated from a four-year college or university. One of Bird’s nominating students wrote, “Ms. Bird was not a very easy teacher. She pushed us hard and demanded a lot of work. She was relentless in her quest to help us. Despite expecting a lot from us, she was very inspirational and motivational. She was enthusiastic and caring, and we loved her because she cared so much and worked so hard to teach us. Consequently, we wanted to do everything we could to make her happy. We did not ever want to disappoint her. We wanted to give back to her because of what she gave to us.”

The awards ceremony will be held in Mill Valley, California, on Nov. 14. She will also participate in the annual educational symposium focusing on major issues facing education in California.
