When Amy Myrick, a One Stop specialist at Brandman’s Menifee campus learned that some members of her son’s military deployment never seemed to get any letters from home, she decided to do something about it. And because #BrandmanCares, her coworkers also got involved.

Here, in her words, are how it unfolded:

“When my son was in basic training, I would send him a letter every other day. It was important to me to build him up and encourage his journey. In one letter home, he told me there were guys in his unit not receiving anything from home. It broke my heart. I immediately posted to my Facebook and asked if anyone was willing to write a letter or card to these soldiers. The response was overwhelming.

I sent the letters to the commander to distribute to anyone in need. For some soldiers, it was the only letter they received. It became my mission to do what I could to give back to those who sacrifice so much for us.

When my son deployed, I again rallied my friends to help. I was able to send several are packages over the months. The response from the soldiers was heartwarming. Some of these soldiers come from very poor families, who simply cannot afford to send a single care package. The simplest things help so much. Wipes, socks, batteries, snacks.

This year I wanted to impact as many as possible. I started a Go Fund Me campaign with that goal. I was able to raise $347 which covered boxes and shipping for 11 soldiers. I budgeted $30 per box for filling and shipping. The campaign was shared over 150 times. My goal next year is to raise enough to fund boxes for 20 soldiers.

As a granddaughter, daughter and now mother of a soldier, my mission in life to show my appreciation and pride each day for our military. Our service members deserve so much. They sacrifice holidays away from family, spend time in dangerous situations and do so willingly.

With the generous help of my Brandman coworkers and family and friends, we are able to send these care packages all over the world. I feel so blessed to be a part of the Brandman family and serve our military on a daily basis.”

Nicole Farnum, manager of Community and Corporate Relations at the Menifee campus, and Miguel Aranda, campus director, helped Myrick put the boxes together. The Menifee campus is on Mount San Jacinto Community College’ Menifee Valley campus and provides students in the Menifee Valley with a convenient way to complete their bachelor’s degrees through a variety of coordinated programs.
