Rachel Choudhury, associate dean and program director for the Marybelle and S. Paul Musco School of Nursing and Health Professions at Brandman University, visited California senators and representatives in Washington D.C. as part of the American Nurses Association RN Day at the Hill. More than 400 nurses took part in the program to advocate to discuss legislation and issues related to nursing and health care.

“The interactions I had with the legislative leaders and their staff was very positive. As I reflect on the activities that transpired during my experience at the event, I realized that nurses have power in numbers! As a trusted profession, we have a voice to influence health policy in our country. We need to be advocates for those who cannot,” reported Choudhury.

She met with Rep. Karen Bass of the 37th Congressional District (Los Angeles) and with Sen. Kamala Harris and Sen. Dianne Feinstein. Topics included:

  • Opposing efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and adopt the House-approved AHCA.
  • Speaking in favor of the Registered Nurse Safe Staffing Act to promote staffing based on patient acuity, not specific staffing ratios. The proposal considers RN educational preparation, competencies, clinical experiences and professional certifications as well as the intensity, complexity and stability of the patients.
  • Advocating for the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Reauthorization Act by requesting continuing support to fund nursing education, including advanced education for nurses.
  • Speaking in favor of the Home Health Care Planning Improvement Act, bipartisan legislation that would allow advanced practice nurses to order home health care services for their patients.
