Ron Miranda: more than meets the eye
Ron Miranda is the senior graphic designer in the marketing department. He’s also a musician and award-winning artist. This month is his fourth anniversary at Brandman University, and the Guam native shares about his personal and professional journey for this week’s cover story.
You might not know Ron Miranda personally but you’ve definitely seen his work at Brandman University. As the Senior Graphic Designer in the marketing department he’s half of the team who create just about every brochure, poster, and other collateral material including the commencement program. Graphic design was not his first career love though. This month Ron is celebrating four years at the university and he shared his story with us.
Ron was born and raised in Guam, he came to the United States as a teenager and found his way to Southern California.
MIRANDA: I wanted to become a musician. I love music, you know, I’ve played piano for many years and I want to become a professional musician and all of a sudden I needed a day job so I got this job in Long Beach as a commercial artists. And this guy named Albert Fradies took me in and taught me everything about commercial art, didn’t know anything, but he knew that I could draw and I had all this artistic ability.
He learned the basics while on the job, eventually deciding to pursue a bachelor’s degree in art at Cal State Long Beach.
MIRANDA: It took me about eight years to get my degree when I finally got it. It taught me a lot about the fundamentals of art.
Armed with his degree and years of experience, Ron found a home at Brandman four years ago. Along with his career as a graphic designer, his skills as an artist also blossomed.
MIRANDA: I love color so, and I love real… I’m a classic artist so anything that’s classic and realistic, I… it’s, I’m into the hyper realistic, it looks like a photograph but then if you look closely, everything is in focus.
After many years of painting, he decided to enter a contest sponsored by the Ironstone Vineyards in Northern California.
MIRANDA: I wasn’t expecting to win, you know, but out of about 150 paintings it was chosen the Family Merit Award which is the Ironstone family’s favorite painting. It didn’t place first second or third but it was their favorite piece of the contest. And then this year I entered the contest again and, lo and behold, it came in second place which I was really, really happy!
While his aspiration to become a professional musician as a teenager shifted to art, it never disappeared.
MIRANDA: I do love music and I play every once in a while and in certain clubs throughout the area. I’ve played professionally for about the past 30 years, I do sing, and I also play the piano and play keyboards.
In 2013 Ron sang the national anthem at the Southern California commencement ceremony.
What was that like singing the national anthem?
MIRANDA: Very nerve-racking because my throat was dry and it was like a billion people and I go, ‘oh my God,’ and then my face is on the Jumbotron.
Ron Miranda is an artist, a graphic designer and talented musician – a truly creative spirit in the Brandman family.
