The Brandman community is mourning the loss of Dr. Ronald Hollingsworth Browne, who served in various teaching capacities from 1999 to 2014. Dr. Browne taught psychology at the university’s Santa Maria campus.

“Ron Browne’s unwavering, enduring, authentic, and enthusiastic support of me, both personally and professionally, played a pivotal role in my development and growth. Ron always believed in me. Always. And he never failed to remind me of his confidence in what I could achieve,” said Brittany Aleshire, a former student of Browne’s and currently an assistant professor at Brandman’s Santa Maria and online campuses.

He was a licensed clinical psychologist who earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology, M.S. in clinical psychopharmacology, and M.A. in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology, and his B.A. in psychology from UCLA. Dr. Browne also held positions over the years at many sites on the Central Coast, including Atascadero State Hospital, the California Men’s Colony in San Luis Obispo, and the US Penitentiary in Lompoc. He came to Brandman University first as an adjunct faculty member, then rose to core faculty, senior lecturer and full-time faculty.

“I found Ron to be pleasant person who cared about others and assisted them the best that he was able and was well-liked by his colleagues. He was patient, humorous, kind, and uncomplaining – even while challenged medically. Ron contributed to his community and to the university through his expertise and mentoring skills and was an important part of the Brandman Psychology Program Curriculum Team,” said Michael McGuire, Ph.D., professor of psychology and acting associate dean of social work for Brandman.

The entire Brandman community extends its sympathies to Dr. Browne’s family, friends, patients and students. A memorial fund has been set up for his daughter, Taylor, who students may remember from stories he shared in class, and as an occasional class visitor.
