What’s on your desk? Erica Phillips
You won’t find a calendar on the wall of Erica Phillips’ cubicle in Brandman University’s Online campus. What you will find are walls lined with fabric and music posters. The One Stop specialist’s desk, located on the second floor of Irvine’s Central Office, draws people in like a moth to a flame with warm lighting and a bohemian vibe.
"I call my desk my vacation home. My friends named it the Palace of Zen,” Phillips said. The mother of a toddler explained that her workspace is an escape from the swirl of parenting. Phillips, a self-proclaimed Beatles fanatic says her Abbey Road poster is one of her favorite decorations. “I grew up listening to the Beatles and my 3-year-old son enjoys them now too. This poster reminds me of our love for music,” she said.
Three Ikea lamps illuminate her desk. Phillips, who has worked for Brandman for three years, believes the soft lighting also gives her space a relaxed feeling. “Lighting is important. It has a warm calming effect that is helpful when talking to students about financial aid,” she said.
Fabric “wallpaper” sets her workspace out from the cubes that surround her. Phillips lovingly calls the black and white print “Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion inspired.” “I love Halloween. It’s wonderful to have it year-round,” she said with a smile. A small black tree adorned with Mardi Gras beads also echoes the New Orleans flare of the Disney attraction.
“It’s great to be comfortable at work. I spend 40 hours a week here. The Online campus is literally my second home,” Phillips said.
