IRVINE, Calif. (May 7, 2012) – Brandman University, a part of the Chapman University System, today announced that City of Hope has selected Brandman’s School of Nursing and Health Professions to provide educational opportunities to City of Hope nurses seeking a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing degree (BSN). In addition, a special Certificate in Professional Oncology Nursing has been designed by the University especially for City of Hope.
Scholarships are available to qualified students. Information sessions will be held today on the City of Hope campus, followed by an opportunity for prospective students to meet with Brandman advisors on May 9 and 11, 2012. Scholarship winners will be announced by City of Hope on July 2, 2012.
Brandman University’s School of Nursing and Health Professions was selected by City of Hope for an educational affiliation based in part on its mission to prepare nurses to access and evaluate evidence, and implement care based on best practices in a health care environment. Brandman’s curriculum uses an innovative, technology-enriched approach to train advanced practice clinical nursing experts who base decisions on the best evidence available to provide patient-centered, culturally appropriate care.
“I’m proud of the fact that City of Hope has recognized that the quality and relevance of Brandman’s programs will complement its mission. Both of our institutions adhere to a patient-centered philosophy that guides everything we do and elevates the humanistic elements of nursing,” said Renee P. McLeod, PhD, APRN, CPNP, Dean of the School of Nursing and Health Professions. “Nurses at an innovative, state-of-the-art hospital such as City of Hope provide care in an environment that has dramatically changed in recent years. Technology now drives how health care professionals find and track data and communicate with one another. Brandman's curriculum is unique in its focus on technology as well as on developing critical thinking and analysis skills as key leadership factors in an environment characterized by innovation and transformation.”
City of Hope is one of only 41 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States. As such, it is a leader in setting standards for cancer care nationwide. City of Hope seeks to heal the whole person by nurturing the emotional, spiritual, social, as well as physical well-being of its patients.
“Nurses are critical to our mission,” said Shirley Johnson, R.N., M.S., M.B.A., Chief Nursing and Patient Services Officer at City of Hope. ”Now more than ever, education and top-flight training are necessary for us to continue to provide the excellent care for which we are known. We are pleased to enter into this new affiliation with Brandman University.”
All Brandman University programs are specifically designed for adults. The convenience and flexibility of the RN to BSN program makes it a good fit for nurses who want to continue to work full time while in school. Working RNs can explore educational options at Brandman University that include an online nursing component, short immersion sessions on campus and a state-of-the-art immersive simulation lab that offers real world application of the latest technology.
“We are honored to announce this relationship with City of Hope and look forward to the opportunity to help prepare their nurses for the future of health care. We’ve created an innovative advanced nursing practice school and have attracted some of the nation’s leading educators. Educating City of Hope nurses validates the considerable investment we have made,” said Brandman University Chancellor Gary Brahm. “As with all Brandman degree programs, quality, accreditation, personalized service, flexible schedules for working adults and high graduation rates are key benefits for nursing degree candidates."
