University College is becoming Brandman University

The Newly Named University Will Remain Part of Chapman University

IRVINE, Calif. (April 30, 2009) − Chapman University, a nationally recognized 148-year-old institution based in Orange, California, today announced the renaming of its college that serves non-traditional students, Chapman University College, to Brandman University, reflecting a $10 million donation by The Brandman Foundation of Los Angeles. This donation is one of the largest given to a non-profit, adult education institution in the United States.

The announcement occurred at what will be Brandman University’s new administrative headquarters and new home of the Irvine campus, located within the Irvine Spectrum.

Serving more than 10,000 students in California and the state of Washington through 25 campuses as well as online, Brandman University will remain an integral part of Chapman University, but will focus on working students, a group that represents 40 percent of all college enrollments nationwide. Brandman University will offer working students a “no-compromise” education consisting of progressive, flexible and convenient access to an exceptional quality of instruction through smaller classes, real-world curriculum and an enriched faculty/student interface.

The Brandman Foundation, started by Saul Brandman in the 1970’s, has supported more than 100 charities in the U.S. and internationally including Hebrew University, Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, Aspen Music Association and Cedars-Sinai’s Saul and Joyce Brandman Breast Center in Los Angeles. Following Saul’s passing in 2008, Joyce now serves as president to oversee the Brandman Foundation and its charitable mission.

“We have always believed that education is one of the true opportunities that should be available to everyone who wants to better their own lives and those of their families. Saul and I were strong advocates that a college education is a life-long pursuit and provides an important stepping stone in helping people reach their career and personal goals,” said Mrs. Brandman.

During its 51-year history, Chapman University College has awarded more than 65,000 degrees and teaching credentials. Current degree programs include education, organizational leadership, criminal justice, health care and more. Chapman University College has a graduation rate of 66 percent, a rate higher than other educational institutions focused on serving adult students. The University has a tradition of producing successful alumni who have included numerous local, regional and national “Teachers of the Year”, military leaders, a Fulbright Scholar and elected state and congressional representatives.

“The generous $10 million donation by The Brandman Foundation acknowledges the important role that Chapman University College has played in providing working students with access to a quality education of real-world value and distinction,” said Dr. James L. Doti, president of Chapman University.

“Brandman University will be among the best providing non-traditional students with in-demand degree and certificate programs, individualized support services, access to top-tier, real-world instructors and flexible and adaptive course schedules,” said Chancellor Gary Brahm, who served more than 13 years at Chapman University before becoming Chancellor at what is now Brandman University. “In a sense, adult education is coming of age and that requires forward-thinking institutions to provide students with real-world skills in a flexible and adaptive environment which responds to today’s challenging economic times and tomorrow’s need for ‘ahead-of-the-curve’ and knowledgeable specialists.”

The donation and name change will not have any impact on students who are attending Chapman University in Orange, CA.
