The Marybelle and S. Paul Musco School of Nursing and Health Professions was dedicated at a special ceremony today in Irvine.
Irvine, CA – JUNE 7, 2012 – Brandman University’s School of Nursing and Health Professions has a formal new name thanks to a major financial gift from an Orange County family with a passion for nursing education. The school was christened ‘The Marybelle and S. Paul Musco School of Nursing and Health Professions’ at a ceremony held on campus today, acknowledging the support of Marybelle and S. Paul Musco, Chairman and Founder of Santa Ana-based Gemini Industries, Inc. The Muscos are well known throughout Southern California for civic leadership, philanthropy, and passionate support for education. Mr. Musco is a member of the Chapman University Board of Trustees and a Regent of Brandman University.
“The generosity of the Musco family will allow us to continue our pursuit of excellence in education for healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, who attend Brandman from all over the country,” said Brandman Chancellor Gary Brahm. “The nation’s shortage of healthcare professionals continues to grow and our mission is to meet this critical need by preparing new graduates with the most innovative, modern education available.
Mr. Musco said his family has a rich history of nursing and medical professionals – himself serving as a medic in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In addition to numerous family members who are nurses, his sisters Pauline and Camilla were both military nurses during World War II, as well as his brother Salvator, who went on to become a dentist and served as a Captain in the U.S. Army. His son, Paul Sebastian, is an ophthalmologist. The Muscos are active advocates for nursing education, which is why they chose to support Brandman’s thriving nursing and healthcare education programs.
“It’s a whole new world of nursing education today and it is vital that students learn all of the modern technology that comes with excellent patient care,” Mr. Musco said. “Marybelle and I are proud to honor our family’s nurses and medical professionals with this gift to Brandman, where we know students are getting a world-class education.”
“It is a very exciting week for nursing and health professions at Brandman University,” Brahm added, noting that university leaders recently learned that Brandman’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs were granted accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), a prestigious endorsement. Officially recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education as a national accreditation agency, the CCNE is an autonomous accrediting agency, contributing to the improvement of the public's health by ensuring the quality and integrity of baccalaureate, graduate, and residency programs in nursing.
Brandman nursing programs blend periodic immersion sessions and clinical practice where students live with online lectures, demonstrations, exercises, and social networking. This blend of teaching methods provides a rich and engaging learning experience for adults who want to move to the next stage of their professional careers. Immersion sessions are held in a state-of-the-art center at Brandman’s Irvine campus, where students are trained on adult and pediatric human simulators that have realistic features such as blinking eyes with pupils that react to light, chests that rise and fall with respirations, pulses, and various heart and lung sounds.
Established in 2010, The Marybelle and S. Paul Musco School of Nursing and Health Professions offers more than a dozen programs, from certificate courses to doctorate degrees and serves students from 38 different states across the country. In addition to the CCNE accreditation, all programs are also accredited by the Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC).
