Chapman University College Expands Online Higher Education Opportunities for Military Personnel Stationed Around the World

Distance learning program enables those serving in the armed forces to earn their degrees online in a timely manner regardless of deployment

Orange, Calif. − December 16, 2008 − Chapman University College is introducing seven new online undergraduate degrees and lowering the online tuition fee for activeduty military personnel to $250 per unit starting with spring 2009 classes which begin
January 19. The move enables those currently serving in the United States armed forces to pursue their higher education regardless of where they are stationed or deployed.

“Access to online distance learning programs is critical for active duty personnel pursuing their higher education because the classes can be accessed from anywhere in the world,” said Gary Brahm, chancellor of Chapman University College. “This flexibility in terms of delivering the curriculum during ‘off-hours’ when military personnel are not training or on duty is extremely important in ensuring that these students can complete their degrees in a timely manner regardless of where they are deployed.”

There were 452 military personnel enrolled in Chapman University College for the fall 2008 session serving in countries around the world including Afghanistan, Africa, Britain, Germany, Iraq, Japan and South Korea and on ships deployed in the Persian
Gulf and Mediterranean Sea.

“Active military personnel pursuing a higher education face unique challenges that other students do not,” said retired Navy Rear Admiral David Janes who serves on Chapman University College’s board of regents. “Their commitment to serving their country often places a high demand on their time and availability to take courses in a classroom. But distance learning programs provide them with an opportunity to pursue and complete their degrees online in a timely manner.”

Chapman University College currently offers classes and/or academic advising on six military bases including Naval Air Station Lemoore and Travis Air Force Base in California and McChord Air Force Base, Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Naval Base
Kitsap Bangor and Ft. Lewis Army Base in Washington. Since 1983, 1,689 military students have earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from Chapman University College.
