This program provides eligible candidates with a California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) designated authorization to serve the specific needs of learners with autism. The Autism Spectrum Disorders Added Authorization allows the holder to conduct assessments, provide instruction and special education related services to individuals with a primary disability of autism. The authorization is approved by California's Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).
It is limited to the grade and age levels authorized by the prerequisite credential. For example, when the holder of a Specialist Instruction Teaching Credential in Learning Handicapped adds the authorization, the teacher may serve students in grades preschool, K-12, and adults while the holder of an Education Specialist in Mild/Moderate Disabilities who adds the authorization may serve students in grades K-12 through age 22.
The courses taken in the program may also be valuable for enhancing the learning experience for special education students. These types of students are welcome to take individual classes or successfully complete the entire program to receive a certificate of completion for professional development opportunities.
