Biography

 

Dr. Michael J. McGuire is a Professor of Psychology and has been a faculty member with the Brandman-Chapman University System since 1986. His teaching interests include history, psychology, and social work. He teaches and develops undergraduate and graduate courses that have included history of psychology, group therapy, psychopathology, family and individual therapy, psychological assessment, case management, geriatric mental health, and The American West, to name a few. His approach to teaching is to develop a dynamic and interactive experience for the student within a comfortable atmosphere of uninhibited discourse that emphasizes courtesy and respect. Dr. McGuire has served the university as Associate Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, Chair of the Faculty Personnel Committee, a member of the Faculty Executive Committee, and a member of the Provost Search Committee, among other duties and responsibilities. He has made scholarly presentations at international, national, and regional conferences that have included the American Association of Colleges & Universities, the Council of Colleges of Arts & Sciences, the International Institute of Logotherapy, and the Washington State Mental Health Professionals Association of which he is a founding member. During the past 41 years his clinical experience has included community mental health, adult and juvenile probation services, sexual offender treatment programs, maximum security prisons, hospital emergency rooms, and civil commitment of the mentally ill. In addition to teaching Dr. McGuire serves as a docent for Historic Ft. Steilacoom (1849-1868) in Lakewood, Washington where he discusses the historical significance of the site to visitors.
