Amy J.
I took the Autism program classes and found the passion of special education, which I really never thought of as an option. I finished the Autism program and enrolled in Brandman’s Master of Special Education. Two professors at Brandman that have inspired me throughout my program are Dr. Nicholson and Dr. Spillane. The professors at Brandman support their students and truly want them to be successful. The online format works best for my busy schedule, they understand that we are busy working adults, so they are encouraging with high expectations. I have learned to reflect on my teaching and determine if I am reaching all students and on how to better reach any struggling students.

I needed to get my autism authorization and Brandman’s program was affordable and the timeline fit my schedule. As a working mom, I wanted a program that allowed me to complete my coursework at home. I have a deeper understanding of the functions of the coping mechanisms often used by students with autism, which helps me be more empathetic and patient when we are working together. I really appreciate that Brandman's instructors were committed to helping us learn – they made the classes accessible and encouraged growth, and they were reachable by phone and email.

As a result of my experiences in the program, I feel prepared to teach students with ASD. Before enrolling in this class, I admit I was intimidated and fearful of teaching students with ASD. I am much more confident in my ability to teach students with ASD, and my principal and co-workers appreciate my new knowledge. I feel prepared for my experiences with students with ASD and I am much more comfortable in the classroom.
