Early Childhood Special Education Added Authorization

This authorization program allows teachers with special education credentials to add an authorization to teach children with disabilities, birth through age 5. ECSE programs can be administered by school districts, county offices of education, regional centers, or in private childcare settings and family homes.

Early Childhood Special Education Program Overview

The Early Childhood Special Education Added Authorization is an interdisciplinary specialization that focuses on services for infants through preschool age children who have disabilities and their families. ECSE specialists work in a variety of programs and settings and may consult with Early Childhood Education agencies and classroom teachers to facilitate inclusion. Once the initial course is passed, students follow a prescribed course sequence.

As a student, you will:

  • Recognize characteristics of infants and toddlers with disabilities.
  • Develop skills to act as service coordinators for determining eligibility and for program development.
  • Learn how to implement high quality instruction and intervention for infants and toddlers with disabilities.
  • Understand laws governing services for infants and toddlers with disabilities.
  • Expand your expertise in working with families of infants and toddlers with disabilities.
  • Master consultation and collaboration skills.

Dawn P. | MA, Special Education,
There are definite financial advantages to getting a master’s degree. You have the ability to max out on the pay scale. Initially, this was a motivator for me, but once I got into my master’s program and saw how I could apply what I was learning in my classroom, it wasn’t about the money so much anymore.
