Teaching Credential, Preliminary, Early Childhood Special Education

Designed for candidates who want a career working with infant, toddler and preschool-age children with identified special needs. Teachers specializing in early childhood special education can work in public or private preschools, childcare centers or at private homes.

Program Overview

The Preliminary Early Childhood Special Education Credential focuses on the skills needed to conduct assessments, provide instruction, and special education-related services to young children with disabilities. The curriculum provides educators of young children with advanced methods and strategies for working with learning, development and behavior disabilities.

As a student, you will:

  • Develop the skills required to ensure that instruction and environments are appropriate for the child’s developmental age, needs and identified disabilities.
  • Assist students by cultivating collaborative relationships with families/guardians/caregivers, community members and educational personnel.

  • Reflect the value of and knowledge about children and families from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Think outside the box and incorporate appropriate technology to accommodate students’ individualized needs.

Dawn P. | MA, Special Education,
There are definite financial advantages to getting a master’s degree. You have the ability to max out on the pay scale. Initially, this was a motivator for me, but once I got into my master’s program and saw how I could apply what I was learning in my classroom, it wasn’t about the money so much anymore.
Steve L. | MAE, Teaching, 2017
