Single Subject Added Authorization

This authorization program, comprised of just one additional class, is designed for teachers who already hold a Multiple Subject Credential in California and want to teach in both single- and multiple-subject environments at a junior high and high school level. 

Program Overview

The Single Subject Added Authorization broadens your qualifications and provides greater opportunity for career advancement without having to complete an additional credentialing program. You will select one content area specialization course and must demonstrate subject matter competence by passing the appropriate CSET exam.

As a student, you will:

  • Develop skills in teaching one specific single subject content area
  • Gain the expertise to teach at a junior high or high school level.

Admission Requirements

Applicants intending on enrolling in this program, whether online or on campus, must be California residents and must complete the formal application process with all required documents, which include:

  1. Submit a copy of their appropriate, valid, CTC designated Multiple Subject credential.
  2. Possess a pre-requisite valid CTC designated credential.
  3. A copy of candidates active CA teaching credential.
  • Candidates who have completed the requirements for the 2042 Multiple Subject Credential can add a Single Subject Authorization to their credential.
  • Candidate who have completed the requirements for the Single Subject Credential can add a Multiple Subject Content Authorization to the credential.

Admission Grade Point Average (GPA) Requirements:

Neither transcripts, nor a standard GPA is required

Candidates who have completed the requirements for the 2042 Multiple Subject Credential can add a Single Subject Authorization to their credential by:

  1. Taking EDSU 533 (3 credits) 
  2. Demonstrating subject matter competence through coursework or by passing the appropriate CSET.

Candidates who have completed the requirements for a Single Subject Credential in one content area can add a different Single Subject Authorization in another content area to their credential in one content area can add a different Single Subject Authorization in another content area to their credential by:

1. Taking EDSU 533 (3 credits) in the additional content area with the exception of candidates who are:

  • A. Adding a new science content area to an existing science credential.
  • B. Upgrading a Foundational Level Mathematics credential to a full Math credential.
  • C. Adding an additional World Language content area to an existing World Language Credential.

2. Demonstrating subject matter competence through coursework ir by passing the appropriate CSET.
