Gerald Lege, Ed.D

Jerry Legé has been a teacher for over thirty years in positions that range from the secondary level to graduate school in socially disadvantaged and culturally diverse communities.  He holds a B.A. degree in mathematics from U.C. Berkeley, and M.A. and Ed.D. degrees from Teachers College Columbia University.  He has previously worked at the American University in Dubai, California State University Fullerton and Brookdale Community College, after having spent twenty years at the secondary level teaching mathematics, physical science and computer science. His main scholarly areas of interest are the mathematical preparation of teachers, both in terms of content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge, and the teaching of mathematical modeling at the secondary and tertiary levels.  His dissertation work structured a highly complex cognitive task (mathematical modeling) with learning outcomes and assessment rubrics to examine whether it is better to build content knowledge or experiential processes first.  He has worked as a research associate on an investigation evaluating the potential of high school students coming from innovative, non-traditional curricula to transfer the knowledge they had to unusual tasks and the methods they employed, and served in a leadership capacity on a $6 million National Science Foundation grant as faculty partner and authored curriculum materials on applications of mathematics.
