Industry leaders and the United States government recognize that attaining a higher education is the single most important investment you can make for the future, but realize that this journey has never been more expensive than it is today. The concept of Competency-Based Education was born as part of legislature’s call to action to improve affordability, accessibility and quality in higher education.
Innovation is a core value of Brandman University which is why our faculty and staff place high importance on new ideas and rigorously promote them to ensure that curriculum is relevant and engaging. MyPath is a product of our mission to provide a dynamic education based on excellence and flexibility for evolving careers.
Chancellor Gary Brahm expands upon this in his article Competency-Based Education: A Disruptive Force whose Time has Come featured in EvoLLLution, an online publication intended to illuminate the lifelong learning movement:
In 2014, there are some alarming trends in higher education. Enrollments have declined over the past year due to higher costs. A staggering 54 percent of Americans are underemployed, and employers are telling educators that the skills gap is widening. I see CBE as a way to address these issues.
Competencies are derived from employer requirements, professional certifications, Lumina Foundation Degree Qualifications Profile and the rubric competencies of the Association of American Colleges & Universities’ LEAP initiative. A student can complete the degree at his or her own pace. Tuition will be approximately half of what a state university would charge, and the time it would take to complete a degree would average roughly 30 months.
Brandman University is proud to participate in this revolutionary initiative by offering bachelor’s degree programs in this innovative new format. This change in the higher education landscape opens doors for those seeking career promotions or new jobs. “On several occasions, the conversations turn to where ‘we’ went to school… I secretly cringe waiting for them to ask what my degree is in. I feel this is the one place where I lack credibility in my job... and where having a degree will make a difference.”
