What's the difference between Integrated Social Science and Sociology?

The BA in Integrated Social Science and the BA in Sociology both focus on people. The BA in Sociology studies society by using the sociological perspective, while the BA in Social Science is interdisciplinary, which brings together thoughts and approaches from different disciplines.



Integrated Social Science



Studies the relationship between society and the environment in which it resides. Almost all the aspects of society are studied.

 Studies human social behavior and how society organizes itself.
Examines the connection between people, places, and physical environments using analytical tools such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and data analysis.  Explores humanity’s diverse ways of interacting, and attempts to understand the institutions and social systems that we build (i.e. family, social class, etc.,). Studies how these social forces shape individual experiences and choice.
Communication, culture, and spatial thinking are central components. Focus on cultures, family patterns and relationships, gender and ethnic relations, social inequality, and value systems.
Focuses on interdisciplinary problem solving in society both in the community and globally.

Problem solving by understanding how our social world works and how it influences our personal lives. 

Key skills include: Analytical ability, Data Collection, Analysis and Interpretation, Team Work, Problem Solving, and Research. Key skills include: Listening, Critical Thinking, Patience, Research, Analytical ability, Understanding and knowledge of social institutions and social interaction
Broad in scope, hands-on, and applied learning Theoretical in nature while presenting scientific methods designed to analyze society.
Teaches the use of technology (ArcGIS) to visually influence and tell a story through the use of maps. Explores cultural dynamics, norms, roles, and other social forces that define societies.
