Office of Accessible Education extends its message to Abu Dhabi
Assistant Vice Chancellor Loren O’Connor and Alex Price, coordinator for the Office of Accessible Education and Counseling Services at Brandman University, recently talked about Brandman’s approach to making education accessible to students with learning and physical disabilities with faculty members and students at the United Arab Emirates University in Abu Dhabi.
O’Connor was the keynote speaker for “Bringing Dreams to Reality: Innovative Advocacy and Accessibility as a Collaborative Model in Higher Education” and Price led a pair of panel discussions and workshops.
O’Connor reviewed the need to emphasize ability over disability for people with psychological issues, chronic health conditions, traumatic brain injury, autism, loss of vision and/or hearing loss. Among the topics they discussed were the need for training and workshops for faculty, a step-by-step approach to developing an Office of Accessible Education, how to teach students to advocate for themselves and some of the assistive technology and other support services that help make education more available.
Price presented a workshop on Brandman’s study into the effectiveness of training students with acquired brain injuries on mobile assistive applications that support time management, stress release and organization techniques.
