New academic advisor Carlos Alamo is eagerly getting started at Brandman University’s Whidbey Island campus in Washington state. After serving 29 years in the U.S. Navy, most recently as a command master chief, he’s ready to help new and potential students figure out their paths to earning college degrees.

“I’ve served taking care of sailors and their families most of my Navy career,” said Alamo. “This is a continuation of that journey. I’ve always been interested in teaching, so this will be a way for me to help students navigate higher education and lay out a path so they can achieve their career goals.”

Given his long career in the Navy, Alamo understands the growing role that college degrees play in military advancement. Not only are promotions competitive, but having that college education is needed to help lead young sailors.  It’s so important he plans on beginning a master’s degree in 2017.

Alamo has a great appreciation for Brandman students who may also be active duty, juggling the demands of classes, families and a full-time job, or spouses who are also balancing similar demands. “I received my bachelor’s degree in 2014,” explains Alamo. “And I have three daughters, a stepson, and my wife, Christine, of 22 years, so I know the challenges.”

During his Navy career, Alamo did three separate tours on the USS Abraham Lincoln, traveling to the Persian Gulf and the Middle East, as well as Australia and Japan. But he calls Naval Air Station Whidbey Island ‘home.’

“All of my commands have been here in Washington state,” said Alamo. “Oak Harbor has been a great place to live and raise my family.”

Now he’s ready to help others achieve their educational goals as the newest addition to the staff at Brandman University.
