November 07, 2016 by Cindy O'Dell

Brandman University Assistant Professor Julianne Zvalo-Martyn and recent early childhood education (ECE) graduates Tamarah Williams, Litia Wilson and Courtney Powell participated in the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) 2016 Conference held Los Angeles Nov. 2-5.

Zvalo-Martyn’s presented “Working with Families to Build Executive Function in Young Children.” The workshop addressed the adult relationships and environments needed to build higher thinking skills in young children. “It was based in part on some of my previous work in engaging families and school readiness,” said Zvalo-Martyn. “What was unique about the workshop is that it focused on developing an appreciation for family culture and tradition in a way that makes the family feel essential and needed. Our goal is for families to realize that they are important and they already have what they need to engage their children with rich, emotionally satisfying language interactions.

Each participant also received a copy of the handbook for parents that she developed at First 5 San Mateo. Among those attending the were a contingency from China who asked for more information afterward, said Zvalo-Martyn.

Williams, Wilson and Powell, who also represented her Westside School District, worked with Brandman faculty member Faith Polk to create a workshop on using literature to promote diversity and support culturally and linguistically diverse learners.

The team had participants examine their own beliefs about culture, diverse and language learning and the ways their beliefs impact their practices. They presented research on best practices for working with linguistically diverse children and practical strategies for selecting appropriate multicultural children’s literature to enhance learning.

Participants worked in small groups to come up with lesson plans that used a multicultural picture book.
