Alumna’s Head Start program earns state honor
Arika Spencer-Brown, a Brandman graduate and executive director of the First Baptist Head Start in Pittsburg, California, led State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson on a visit through three of the six centers she directs last week. Torlakson’s visit came after Spencer-Brown’s Head Start Agency was identified as one of the model Head Start programs in Northern California for the quality of the program it provides.
“He was delighted about how well run our programs are, the welcoming nature of our staff, and the happiness of our children he encountered. He lends his full support to our program and vows to visit again to visit our other centers,” said Spencer-Brown. “It was a wonderful visit and a complete honor.”
She said the two-hour visit reinforced Torlakson’s commitment to early learning. Spencer-Brown earned her Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree at Brandman.
