Santa Maria academic advisor takes community involvement to next level: running for office
LeAnn Akins, an academic advisor at the Santa Maria campus, is preparing a run for the Arroyo Grande City Council. Last week, she pulled nomination papers and intends to complete the process by the Aug. 18 deadline. The election is Nov. 8.
Although not a longtime resident of the 18,000-population community, Akins became involved with the political scene two years ago because of concerns voiced by her neighbors.
“I know I have a lot of support, but it is still a daunting task. Whether I’m seated (on the council) or not, whatever the effect, many of the major issues that have been swept under the rug are being put out there,” said Akins.
The former high school teacher is emphasizing transparency, servant-leadership, sustainability and a balanced budget. Her campaign statement can be found here.
