The Alumni Association’s “Angels Day” at Angels Stadium in Anaheim, California, sold out almost immediately. For the lucky ones who were quick to reply, it was a day full of friendship, alumni-meeting, pizza-and hot-dog-eating and, depending on which team you were rooting for, winning.

While the Angels fans far outnumbered the Mariners fans, it was the Seattle fans who got to celebrate a win. In the case of Teresa Ascencio, a Riverside campus alumni and Mariners fan, that was just one of the highlights. She was also thrilled to be taking home an Alumni Association license plate holder.

There were plenty of other reasons to enjoy the day. Albert Pujols hit a home run to the delight of Angels fans.

Alumni Brandi Kulikov-Ramirez and Jason Ramirez made the drive from the Santa Maria area. He earned his B.A. in criminal justice from the Santa Maria campus and she earned both her B.A. in psychology and then returned for a master’s degree. “Staying local was a huge advantage for us,” said Kulikov-Ramirez, who found the smaller campus and having many of the same people in each class made it easier for her to make friends.

Others enjoying the day were alumnus Eduardo Valdez and his guest Catalina Garcia; Jim Vasconcellos, who earned his M.A. in organizational leadership in December 2014 and immediately enrolled in the Ed.D. program;  and the Calhoun family. Kitty Calhoun is both an alumna and manager of Community and Corporate Relations for the Antelope Valley campus.

While it was mostly fun and games, the event was also an opportunity to raise more than $500 for the Alumni Association Scholarship. Tami Frankenfield, an Alumni Association board member, donated a week’s stay at a condominium on Catalina Island. The lucky winner was alumnus Scott Jaeggi who earned his B.A. in applied studies. A baseball signed by Angels pitcher Hector Santiago was also won by Jaeggi who donated it back after winning the bigger prize. It eventually went to guest Ken Schmitz (not pictured).

Alumni traveled from Santa Maria, San Diego and Palm Desert. The enthusiastic response means future events could be in the works for a Padres game in San Diego.
