Academic resource conference draws on Brandman’s expertise

arc2016logoNumerous faculty members and administrators from Brandman University participated in the Western Senior College University Commission Academic Resource Conference (ARC2016) held April 6-8 in Garden Grove.

The conference focused on highlighting higher education’s contributions to the public good including addressing broad societal needs while also promoting individual student success.

Lata Murti, assistant professor of sociology from the Santa Maria campus, presented “Designing Coherent Pathways through the Curriculum: Lessons from NILOA’s Assignment Library Initiative” with National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA) senior scholar Pat Hutchings and Maria Zack, a Point Loma Nazarene University professor.

Ellen Derwin, associate dean, and Marnie Elam, associate professor of psychology at the San Diego campus, presented “You Can Take That to the Bank: Building Curriculum That Enhances Critical Work and Life Skills” as part of a breakout session on curricular planning and resources.

Kat Ringenbach, professor of psychology, and William Hale, professor of education, presented “Training Versus Education and the Loss of our Educational Soul” during a session on perspectives on higher education. Both teach at the Antelope Valley campus.

Gale Mazur, assistant professor of organizational leadership and human resources from the Irvinecampus, and Ringenbach presented “Infusing Critical Thinking Skills into Curriculum and Assessment” during a session that looked at developing and assessing critical thinking.

In the same session, Leigh Ann Wilson, assistant professor of history teaching online, discussed “Using History as a Mirror: World War II Student Research as a Vehicle for Inspiring Critical Thinking, Social Change, and Self-Growth.”

In a session focusing on the implementation of effective credit for prior learning practices to help raise postsecondary credential completion rates, Laurie Dodge, vice chancellor of Institutional Assessment and Planning and vice provost, presented “A Credit for Prior Learning Primer: Implementing Policy and Practice for Excellence and Sustainability.” Others presenting with her were Mary Beth Lakin from the American Council on Education and Phyllis R. Nelson from Cal Poly, Pomona.

Annie Hough-Everage, professor of Education at the Victorville campus, and Hale led a session called “Mentoring Online Students from Diverse Backgrounds Who Have Limited Prior Experience to Have Greater Success in Discussion Forums.”

Dodge and Derwin also led the workshop, “Competency Based Education: A Blueprint for success.”
