Brandman grad’s Head Start agency honored
The Pittsburg, California, Chamber of Commerce, will honor First Baptist Church-Head Start as the 2015 Pittsburg Non-Profit Business of the Year at a luncheon on Feb. 11. Arika Spencer-Brown, the executive director of the agency, graduated in May with a Doctor of Education in organizational leadership from Brandman University.
As executive director, Spencer-Brown oversees the day-to-day operations of six Head Start centers serving more than 400 children every year. In choosing the organization, the Chamber of Commerce selection committee highlighted the agency’s business excellence and its demonstration of the highest standards of ethical conduct, integrity and civic and social responsibility.
Spencer-Brown has been with the Head Start agency for 11 years. “Brandman opened my eyes to my capabilities and to my role as a leader,” she said. The program helped her to bring out the leadership skills of her team and further develop a “can-do” attitude. The Chamber of Commerce award, she said, confirms how important the Head Start program is in her community.
