Multiple school districts have positions to fill at event on February 4, 2016 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Brandman University’s Palm Desert Campus. People interested in learning about careers in education are encouraged to attend as well.

A critical shortage of teachers and substitute teachers is impacting communities across the state of California. Nonprofit Brandman University in Palm Desert is teaming up with Riverside County Office of Education and local school districts to host a teacher and substitute teacher hiring event on February 4, 2016 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Brandman University’s Palm Desert Campus (75105 Merle Dr., Suite 800, Bldg. B, Palm Desert). To RSVP for the event email ameza@brandman.edu. This local event is part of a state-wide network of hiring events being hosted at various locations throughout California.

“We are thrilled to host this event to help fill critical full-time teacher and substitute teacher positions with passionate, highly competent, and technologically savvy teachers for our partner school districts,” said Dr. Christine Zeppos, Dean of the School of Education at Brandman University. “Due to the increase of teacher retirements, the increase in the number of K-12 students to teach, and the fact that statewide California has produced about 50 percent fewer teachers each year than we did 10 years ago, the state is facing a serious teacher shortage that will last for several years. There is no better time to enter the teaching profession.”

According to the California Department of Education, school districts need to fill 21,500 teaching slots but the state is issuing fewer than 15,000 new teaching credentials a year. California issued 14,810 teaching credentials in 2013-14, according to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. That number has been steadily declining since 2008-09. School districts and private schools will be recruiting for available openings at the February 4 event, and there will be information and resources for those who are seeking to further their education in the Coachella Valley.

“We are so grateful to Brandman for organizing the Education Expo!  Teachers can make a significant difference towards students’ future success” stated Dr. Chona M. Killeen, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources and Risk Management, Coachella Valley Unified School District. “All of us can recall that special educator who inspired us. Nationally recognized as innovators in education and technology, we look forward to meeting outstanding educators with the hope that they join our family and work diligently with us to prepare our students for College, Career and Citizenship!”

Other school districts and organizations participating in the event include Coachella Valley Unified School District, Palm Springs Unified School District, Morongo Unified School District, Beaumont Unified School District, .

Participants should come prepared for same-day interviews and bring resumes and CBEST scores or out-of-state teaching credentials. Those interested in substitute teaching need to meet the qualifications for applying for a 30-day substitute permit. Those and other criteria can be found at http://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials. Information will also be available for those interested in earning a teacher credential through Brandman’s School of Education.
