A critical shortage of teachers and substitute teachers is impacting communities across the state of California. Nonprofit Brandman University in Irvine is teaming up with school districts to host a substitute teacher hiring event on January 30 from 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at the Irvine campus (16355 Laguna Canyon Rd, Irvine). To register online visit www.brandman.edu/JobsInEducation. This local event is part of a state-wide network of hiring events being hosted at various locations throughout California.

“We are thrilled to host this event to help fill critical substitute teacher positions with passionate, highly competent, and technologically savvy teachers for our partner school districts,” said Dr. Christine Zeppos, Dean of the School of Education at Brandman University. “Due to the increase of teacher retirements, the increase in the number of K-12 students to teach, and the fact that statewide California has produced about 50 percent fewer teachers each year than we did 10 years ago, the state is facing a serious teacher shortage that will last for several years. There is no better time to enter the teaching profession.”

According to the California Department of Education, school districts need to fill 21,500 teaching slots but the state is issuing fewer than 15,000 new teaching credentials a year. California issued 14,810 teaching credentials in 2013-14, according to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. That number has been steadily declining since 2008-09. School districts and private schools will be recruiting for thousands of openings at the January 30 events.

“The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District values outstanding teaching and seeks out competent and caring substitutes.  We welcome all teachers who are committed to student learning and because we have been experiencing a shortages of qualified teachers we are focused on securing substitutes in the areas of  K-12 special education, science, and mathematics.  “We are seeking teachers who embody our core values of excellence, collaboration, integrity and innovation,” states Kevin Lee, the Assistant Superintendent of Personnel.  “We also want teachers who actively engage students in the learning process through the implementation of the core curriculum and effective instructional strategies. Our people are the heart and the soul of the district, and we look forward to expanding our team – as we hire outstanding substitutes to become part of the PYLUSD Advantage.”

Other school districts and organizations participating in the event include Buena Park School District Centralia School District, Cypress School District, Fullerton School District, Garden Grove Unified School District, Laguna Beach Unified School District, Lifelong Learning Charter Schools, Newport Mesa Unified School District, Saddleback Valley Unified School District, and Santa Ana Unified School District

Participants should come prepared for same-day interviews and bring resumes and CBEST scores or out-of-state teaching credential. Those interested in substitute teaching need to meet the qualifications for applying for a 30-day substitute permit. Those and other criteria can be found at http://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials. Information will also be available for those interested in earning a teacher credential through Brandman’s School of Education.
