Faculty share: ‘What is your biggest challenge as a college instructor?’

David Gonzalez: I would hope that our students know that we’re here to help, all of us. More communication, it’s really difficult to understand what’s going on if there’s no communication. If there’s a bump in the road, we can generally recover from it, if we know.
Deb Ferber: Trying to stay in touch with my great students after they graduate.
Helen Eckmann: Hmmm, I love teaching. It is my life’s work and so, there’s really nothing I don’t like about teaching. I actually even like grading.
Kathy Bates: One of the biggest challenges is in student writing. And trying to get students to improve in their communication skills.
Marnie Elam: Finding ways to hook different people from different life experiences and different educational experiences in. While it’s a challenge, it’s also really fun and exciting. So I enjoy that challenge.
Melissa Meyer: Finding that interpersonal connection with students. I teach online and so it’s easy to be removed from them. So I struggle to really get to know the students and really form that bond. So I would encourage, any of you to reach out to your instructors and try to foster that relationship.
Monica Shukla: The biggest challenge, I teach a lot of online courses and I love to engage with the students but one of the biggest challenges is even though we send out course announcements to reach out to students, we would love to have students reach back out to us. So really creating that engagement within an online field, especially teaching online statistics.
Sharon Floyd: Probably my biggest challenge is that I don’t get enough hands-on time with my students so when they do reach out to me by phone or email, I’m really excited about meeting with them.
Sibyl Beaulieu: I want students to know that I care about their success, that I want them to do well. Sometimes it takes quite a bit of time to build that kind of rapport with students.
Tim Perez: One of the things that I focus on with my students is if they can be upfront with their time commitments and what they have going on. So earlier communication is better so if there’s an issue, letting us know before something is occurring is a lot more helpful than ask that after the fact.
