Dr. Suzanne Yockelson, assistant professor of special education, Cynthia Linder and Rachel Asman co-authored a study in the Journal of Intellectual Disability that suggests that collaborative efforts are effective in providing access to developmental screenings and referral into subsequent services for at-risk young children who are in family childcare settings.

The study focused on the children of teenage mothers in home day care who might not have access to routine screenings that would lead to early identification and referral for developmental delays. Yockelson initiated a community-based project through Brandman University’s San Diego campus that brought 26 children of teen mothers to a children’s museum. Parents completed questionnaires while playing with their children, and the research group identified 17 children who were referred for evaluation, parent and child programs, and/or family support services.

The article, “A Collaborative Approach to Early Identification and Referral of Children Who are in Family Childcare Settings, Birth to Five Born to Teenage Mothers,” appears in the January edition.
