Brandman’s education innovations detailed at conference in Hawaii

The 14th annual Hawaii International Conference on Education included session, presentations and posters from Brandman University faculty and administrators.

More than 1,500 people from Japan, Canada, Newfoundland, China, England and throughout the U.S. attended the conference held Jan. 3-6 in Honolulu.

School of Arts and Sciences participants included:

  • David Long, who presented a paper titled “Criminal Justice in the Liberal Arts: Towards an Expanded Role for Criminal Justice Studies”
  • Michael Moodian, who presented the paper “Toward Cognitive Frame Shifting: Intercultural Competence Development in Higher Education
  • Catherine Pearlman, who spoke on “Moving from Face-to-Face Teaching to Online Learning: A Case Study of One Instructor’s First Year Transition”
  • Michelle Rosensitto and Margaret Moodian, who presented “Universal Writing Guidelines and Visual Models: Brandman University’s Innovative Tools for Helping Adult Learners to Succeed”
  • Sheila L. Steinberg, who presented “Cultural Strategies for Creating Online Student Engagement.”

Pearlman, Michael Moodian, Margaret Moodian and Steinberg also participated in a session focused on adult education chaired by Rosensitto, the director of the Online Writing and Math Community.

School of Education participants included:

  • Tamerin Capellino and Andrea Munro, who discussed “Preparing Leaders of the Future” about the  new program design for Masters of Arts in educational leadership and administration (M.A.-ELA)
  •  Laurie Wellner and Capellino, who presented a poster, “Developing an Aspiring Leaders Skills Assessment”  on how to measure leadership growth over time as used in the M.A.-ELA program
  • Marilou Ryder, who led a workshop session, “Boost your Promotion Quotient,”  where participants learned to maximize their potential as they move up the career ladder in educational leadership by using planning, packaging, preparation and perseverance.

The goal of the conference was to provide an opportunity for academicians and professionals from various education related fields from all over the world to come together and learn from each other. It also provided a place for academicians and professionals with cross-disciplinary interests related to education to meet and interact with members inside and outside their own particular disciplines.
