Walnut Creek’s Dr. Freed collaborating on new musical
Walnut Creek faculty member Dr. John Freed collaborated to write a new musical entitled All Hallows at Hearst Castle and showcased some of the songs at a Salon event hosted by the Dramatists Guild in San Francisco on April 2. Dr. Freed worked with Bay Area composer Jeff Dunn to write the musical. The notable Craig Carnelia traveled from New York to critique songs from All Hallows at Hearst Castle at the event.
Mr. Carnelia has had four shows produced on Broadway. Working with composer Marvin Hamlisch, he wrote the lyrics for Sweet Smell of Success, written with playwright John Guare, and Imaginary Friends, written with Nora Ephron. Hamlisch and Carnelia received Drama Desk and Tony Award nominations for Sweet Smell of Success and Carnelia received a Drama Desk nomination for his lyrics in Imaginary Friends. As both composer and lyricist, Craig wrote the score for Is There Life After High School? and contributed four songs to Studs Terkel’s Working, for which he received his first Tony nomination.
