What’s on your desk? Susanne Hamilton
After working for the university for nearly 30 years and in 10 locations, it makes sense that Susanne Hamilton’s office could be a shrine to all things Brandman. Better make that all things Brandman, Chapman University College and Chapman Regional Educational Centers.
Currently the campus director at Walnut Creek, Hamilton started as a part-time secretary at the 29 Palms center in the early 1980s. Originally from Vienna, Austria, Hamilton’s career path also includes stints as an administrative assistant, assistant site director and site director while earning her bachelor’s in psychology and a master’s in human resources. Geographically speaking, she’s gone from 29 Palms to San Diego to Carlsbad to Alameda to Sunnyvale to Concord to Walnut Creek. At times her responsibilities included multiple locations, so add Mare Island, Travis and Fairfield to the list.
Making those changes, closing and opening campuses and seeing the changes in focus as new programs are added can be a challenge but one she says she has “absolutely enjoyed.” She’s worked in offices that were small rooms off base libraries and military shacks with termite problems and even earthquake damage, making her current office a very nice upgrade.
Hamilton wishes she had kept a few more campus mementos from the early years. A round plate commemorates Chapman’s 125th anniversary, a picture of herself and Chapman President James L. Doti highlights a Bay Area graduation ceremony, three of several service pins remind her of her years of service.
“Names change and its a challenge at times, but the university takes care of its people, if they’re doing what they’re supposed to be doing … We have a great group,” said Hamilton.
