On Seahawks home game days, Brandman University graduate and current master’s degree student Tarree Dean dons his uniform and heads to Century Link Field. You won’t find him on the field. His work zone is in the stands, helping control some of the loudest, rowdiest and hardcore fans in the NFL. “It’s awesome,” said Dean. “All of the season ticket-holders know me, and it’s almost like family.”

Dean mans his section of the stadium as a staff member, taking fans’ tickets, escorting them to their seats, and making sure they maintain a semblance of control during some of the most exciting games in Seattle. “That last game against Green Bay was crazy,” Dean said. “In fact, I was getting text messages from friends who asked me to call them back simply so they could listen to the crowd noise.”

That game, the NFC Championship matchup versus the Packers, saw the Seattle Seahawks down 19-7 before rallying in the final minutes to stage a comeback and win the game in OT, 28-22. “I’m a staff member first since there are rules to go by,” said Dean. “But we give fans some leeway since we know them as season ticket-holders. We don’t make anyone sit down if no one’s complaining because just about everyone is standing on their feet yelling.”

Dean works Seahawks and Sounders FC games, as well as big events at the Exhibition Center next door, like the Seattle Boat Show. It’s a perk after you have worked as staff for a year, and Dean is on his third year as staff. If you ask him what he likes best, you might be surprised to learn it’s not the access to the games, but the opportunity for leadership.

“There’s good communication,” he said. “We have meetings before the games about what to expect, and afterwards we meet to talk about what happened and how we can do better.”

Leadership is important to a man who spent 26 years in the U.S. Army in human resources. Dean traveled the world during his military career, serving in Australia, Germany, Iraq and Kuwait, among other locations. “I’d guess I spent about half my time in the Army in other parts of the world.”

Now he wants to share his experience teaching children. He’s pursuing his master’s degree in organizational leadership from Brandman University’s Joint Base LewisMcChord program after graduating in August 2014 with his bachelor’s degree, also in organizational leadership. Dean plans to teach elementary school.

If you press Dean about his favorite Seahawk player, he goes back and forth between Richard Sherman and Russell Wilson, but in the end, chooses the quarterback. “If I had to choose, I’m going with Wilson,” said Dean. “You know what you’re going to get with him. He’s a leader.”

Some staff members are invited to go the Super Bowl games, but unfortunately for Dean, he’s not going this year. He didn’t go to last year’s Super Bowl game either, in which the Hawks dominated the Denver Broncos, 43-8. No matter. “I have a Super Bowl ring,” Dean said, and which he proudly displays. “It’s a replica of the real ring that players have, but isn’t made with real diamonds. It’s a beautiful ring!”

As for this Sunday’s Super Bowl game between the Seahawks and Patriots, Dean will be rooting for his Seattle team. He’s predicting a close game. And the final score? Without a doubt, he says his Seahawks will win by a final score of 24-21.
