Brandman University was well represented at the recent Esri Education. Esri Business and Esri User conferences held in San Diego at the beginning of July. The conferences gave university representatives the opportunity to highlight the collaboration between Brandman University and Esri in the development of training and education programs using geographic information system (GIS) data.

Attending the conference were Nancy Salzman, dean of the School of Extended Education; Sheila Steinberg, a professor in the School of Arts and Sciences and developer of the new B.A. in Integrated Social Studies program that incorporates GIS training; and Lindsay Yossef, the instructional designer from Brandman’s Center for Instructional Innovation who worked with Steinberg to develop the social science courses geared toward adult learners. Others attending the conference were Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Charles Bullock, Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and Institutional Planning Hadassah Yang, faculty member Monica Shukla and Jennifer Murphy, assistant vice chancellor for Instruction Innovation.

Steinberg served quadruple duty, as a panelist following the keynote address on “Frontiers in GIS Science, ” presenting co-authored papers on citizen-driven initiatives supporting efforts to preserve historic neighborhoods and assessing fish consumption in the San Diego Bay, and partnering with Yossef in a presentation titled “GIS and Integrated Social Sciences: Empowering Adult Learners.”

Patty McGray from Esri joined Salzman, Yossef and Steinberg in a presentation on how Brandman University and Esri are partnering to integrate GIS into their business and social science programs at Brandman in a certificate program targeting nonprofits through the School of Extended Education. That program will start in October (Fall 2 session).
